A colleague and I worked on a social media campaign for a special event, Zombie Preparedness Festival, for our Emergency Management Department. As a gesture of appreciation for our efforts, the Emergency team presented us with a “challenge coin”. I had never heard of a challenge coin, so I looked up its origins. According to various Web sources, the coins were used during the Roman Empire to rewarded soldiers for their achievements. They were also used during WW I and II as a tradition to ensure that all members of a unit carried their medallion or coin at all times. If a challenger asked to see the coin and a soldier could not produce it, he was required to pay for a drink. The coin challenge was meant to be a source of morale. Today, the coins are typically given as rewards for outstanding service.
